PIVOT+

PIVOT+ is a synchronous/asynchronous model consisting of ten modules over 10 days. As a cohort, participants review content and complete reflection activities asynchronously in a Blackboard course while preparing their course materials for online delivery. Effective practices for using technology and teaching online are core themes. Daily synchronous webinars via Bb Collaborate will focus on key essential tools. Experienced faculty serve as peer mentors.

Workshop Outcomes

  1. Prepare course map to plan course design strategy
  2. Write measurable course and unit-level learning objectives
  3. Identify pedagogical strategies and low/high tech options for active learning, building online community, and reconceptualizing assessments
  4. Define and apply the Essential Standards from the Quality Matters 6th Edition Rubric
  5. Describe time management strategies for online teaching
  6. Share effective practices with the peers in the UMBC community
  7. Connect with peers in a growing community of faculty who are teaching online at UMBC, within the University System of Maryland, and in a global network of professionals

Cohort Model

PIVOT is grounded in the evidence-based principles for how people learn and shares many of the best practices of teaching in face-to-face classrooms, leveraging those principles and adapting the practices to the online environment. PIVOT also infuses the highly-regarded Quality Matters (QM) standards for effective online course design throughout the program.

The cohort model may be organized by college or department, or it may be offered in a cross-disciplinary format. Ideally the cohort is limited to 25 participants with two faculty peer mentors.

Badging

Participants who complete the PIVOT+ program requirements and acquire the identified competencies will earn digital badges.
