NDLW: When Good Design Is Invisible - Helping Students Recognize UDL

A National Distance Learning Week Conversation

Description

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) asks instructors to anticipate learner variability and make purposeful choices about how students engage with content, participate in learning, and demonstrate what they know. But what happens when students don’t recognize those choices -- or aren’t sure how to use them?

UDL is a proactive approach to course design. Rather than waiting for barriers to emerge, instructors anticipate predictable challenges and build in options, flexibility, structure, or support from the start. The goal is not to create a different learning experience for every student, but to design meaningful pathways that help all students work toward the same learning goals.

For faculty, this raises an important question: How can we help students recognize and make purposeful use of the choices built into courses?

During this panel, colleagues will share examples of intentional design choices, what they have learned from observing how students respond to those choices, and strategies for helping students understand the purpose behind flexibility, choice, structure, and support.

We’ll consider questions such as:

  • What does UDL look like in practice from a student’s perspective?

  • How do students interpret and use the choices and supports you provide?

  • When does flexibility empower students, and when might it create uncertainty?

  • How can we make the purpose behind course design choices more explicit?

  • What can we do to help students develop greater agency in navigating their learning?

Good design is often invisible when it works well. A clearly organized course, multiple ways to engage with material, flexible opportunities to demonstrate learning, or well-timed support may seem straightforward to an instructor -- yet students may not recognize these features as intentional choices designed to help them succeed.

This event is offered as part of National Distance Learning Week, an annual celebration sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) to generate awareness and discussion about trends, innovations, and possibilities in distance and digital learning.
